The Power Of Connection

Be it digital or human, when we bring things together, we create something greater.

I took my kids to see the Minecraft movie today, and somewhere between the pixelated landscapes and epic block battles, something clicked for me.

Minecraft has become the new LEGO. When I was a kid, I spent hours snapping bricks together, testing ideas, breaking things down, and starting over.  It was creativity in its purest form, imagination fuelled by possibility.  And while the tools have evolved, the essence hasn’t changed.

What’s been fascinating to see is that my children still play with LEGO and love it.  The LEGO ideas sets that have evolved over time have become better and better with my eldest’s favourite being the Home Alone house.  Minecraft hasn’t replaced those colourful bricks, it’s enhanced the experience.  It’s taken the same building blocks of creativity and brought them into a virtual world where the possibilities are truly endless.  They’ll build something in LEGO on the living room floor, then bring that same idea to life in a whole new way.  The digital and physical worlds are feeding each other, and their imaginations are thriving because of it.

But what really struck me today is how Minecraft, at its core, is about connection.

It’s the connection between materials, wood and stone become tools, tools become machines, and simple ingredients become complex builds.  It’s the connection between people.  Players from all over the world joining forces to create, explore, and solve problems together.  Minecraft teaches them that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  That when you bring things, or people together, you unlock potential.

And that idea has been on my mind all week.

Just last week, I was lucky enough to attend the Tableau Conference in San Diego.  Like Minecraft, it was a space built around creativity, problem-solving, and connection.  Instead of crafting blocks, we were learning about new developments, tips and tricks, and connecting with the community.  It wasn’t just about dashboards or data.  It was about people.

I met individuals who challenged my thinking, inspired new ideas, and reminded me that the most powerful outcomes happen when diverse minds come together.  We weren’t all from the same backgrounds, but we shared a common language: curiosity.  Whether it was deep conversations over coffee or spontaneous brainstorms between sessions, the connections I made reminded me why I love what I do.

There’s something incredibly powerful about bringing different elements, be they materials in a game or people in a room and building something new.  Minecraft and Tableau Conference might seem like worlds apart, but both reminded me of a universal truth: when we connect, we create.

The more people that connect, the bigger the community and in the Tableau world, that community has a name: the DataFam.  A network of passionate, generous, brilliant individuals who uplift each other, share openly, and build together.  It reminded me that none of us are alone in our creative journeys, we’re part of something bigger.

So today, I walked out of the cinema inspired, not just by the movie, but by what it represents.  The power of connection isn’t just a theme in Minecraft or at conferences, it’s something we can embrace in every part of our lives.

Whether it’s reaching out to someone new, starting a conversation, building something together, or simply showing up with curiosity.  Every connection we make has the potential to spark something meaningful.

So I encourage you to take that next step.  Send the message.  Share the idea.  Join a community.  Make the time. Because when we choose to connect, we choose to build something bigger than ourselves.

Here’s to building something amazing, together.
